The Swedish Trade Council will host a country pavilion together with the Swedish Energy Agency at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi. The event will take place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center 16-19 January 2012.
WFES is the world’s foremost annual meeting committed to advancing future energy, energy efficiency and clean technologies by engaging political, business, finance, academic and industry leaders to drive innovation, business and investment opportunities in response to the growing need for sustainable energy. WFES includes a world class summit, an international exhibition, the Project Village, Round Table Discussions, the Young Future Energy Leaders program, corporate meetings and social events.
The last event received many plaudits, both locally and from Sweden and we were thrilled to have HRH Crown Princess Victoria visit the pavilion and inaugurate the Swedish Trade Council office at Masdar City. Our aim is to make next WFES equally successful.

Greenbuild International Conference and Expo is the World’s largest expo and conference dedicated to green building (
www.greenbuildexpo.org). The event is arranged by the U.S. Green Building Council, the organization behind certification system LEED, together with the Canadian Green Building Council. Greenbuild is a great marketing occasion for almost any company in green construction, from architects and material suppliers to renewable technology companies. This year we will put special focus on district energy and green energy solutions for buildings.
Greenbuild comes to Toronto!
This year Greenbuild will be held in Toronto, Canada, and it is the first time that the expo is arranged outside the U.S. The City of Toronto is a leader in the North American market when it comes to implementing new green technologies and is continuously looking to improve its sustainability, and several projects in the city already collaborate with Swedish companies. The U.S. market is also under ongoing rapid change and the green building sector increased by 50 percent from 2008 to 2010 and is currently valued to 63 billion USD. That number is expected to double by 2015.
Most important event of the year
The expo and conference is the most important event within green building in North America , and in 2010 the exhibition had 28 000 visitors and more than 1000 exhibitors. Last year participants in the Swedish delegation visited Chicago either in a sales or market intelligence purpose. Based on the success of that event there will be a new delegation going to Toronto headed by the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Trade Council.
At Greenbuild in Toronto the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Trade Council offer:
- Swedish pavilion in connection with the Nordic pavilion at a central location. Participating companies can use the pavilion as a marketing and meeting area, as well as to present company and product information
- Events and seminars in the pavilion. Participating companies also have the possibility to arrange seminars
- Evening seminar with matchmaking
- Assistance to set-up one-to-one meetings with potential partners, industry experts or other industry specialists can be offered
- Welcome dinner
- Accommodation in Toronto from October 4-7
- Exhibit hall tickets October 5-6

As a result of very successful and sold-out tours in 2009/2010, The Swedish Trade Council and the Canadian Urban Institute, in association with the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa and Embassy of Canada in Stockholm, are planning a Study Tour to Sweden related to sustainable urban planning during 2011.
With content and examples from across Sweden, and opportunities for interactive participation and discussion with sustainability experts in the government as well as the private sector, this will truly be a comprehensive international learning experience. As with the previous study tours, we expect participation from across Canada, and all Canadian companies, organizations and municipalities are welcome to attend!
BR>Visit Sweden’s top sustainable communities such as Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm, Västra Hamnen in Malmö and Älvstranden in Gothenburg. Meet with community leaders and companies involved in building sustainable cities. Apply these concepts to Canadian cities for a “made in Canada” approach to sustainable city-building, including for example:
-
Passive Low Energy Housing
-
Electrical Vehicles
-
District Energy
-
Waste to Energy, Biogas, Underground waste collection
-
Brownfield development
-
Neighborhood revitalization
-
Community Involvement, Government legislation and incentives
Testimonials
“This particular tour opened my eyes to community infrastructure advancements in sustainable design for which Sweden seems to have a 20 year head start over North America. We must learn from the Swedes.
”Peter Busby, Architect and Director, Busby Perkins+Will, Vancouver, British Columbia
“Thank you so much for organizing a first class tour of Sweden, and its leadership on waste, energy and sustainability. I learned an awful lot, and three of us did quite a successful radio interview on Saturday as a result”
Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, Mayor, District of West Vancouver, British Columbia.

Companies within the Swedish construction and property sector, municipalities and government authorities have started a project to evaluate and adapt or develop a system for sustainability certification of urban areas. We see major advantages in cooperating with other countries in the adaptation of such a certification system. The vision of the project is to create a mutual working process that engages and leads to sustainable urban development.
In the first step of the project, international systems are being evaluated for use in Sweden. Environmental certification of buildings is getting increasingly popular in Sweden and many other countries. To create urban areas that are also environmentally and socially sustainable, increased coordination between all involved parties is needed when planning an urban area. A certification system will be a useful tool in this coordination.
The project has carried out ten workshops with different themes during the spring. An evaluation will be made of whether BREEAM Communities can be adapted to Swedish conditions. In a next step, the project group also wants to evaluate other systems, including LEED Neighbourhood Development.
To share knowledge, to get inspiration from projects in other countries and to discuss future cooperation we are inviting you to participate in this international conference.
Organizers: Sweden Green Building Council, City of Malmö and The Delegation for Sustainable Cities
